Some basic lathe work…

While I’m without tools here in Paris, I was fortunate to visit my Uncle over Christmas who has taken up woodworking and has all sorts of great toys… That being said he doesn’t think they should be considered toys when they have the potential to make you a living – good point.

Anyways, he had just bought a small lathe and my Aunt had found this silver star, likely meant to go on top of a tree.  These two events combined led to this little wood pedestal to help display the star.  My original plan was a bit more complex, but this being the first time I’d used a lathe in 20 years, I thought I should start out simple.  Finish was some paste wax, not sure what the wood was, looked a bit like Teak and was very oily.

52 Create – Craftvent Calendar, Day 11

52 Create, my weekly creative output for 2011.  Continuing along with my “Craftvent” calendar for my 2 year old daughter.  Simply put, it’s an advent calendar filled with crafts, all home made, many will be joint projects so she gets some fun of making stuff as well.

Day 11 – While a lot of these advent crafts have been Christmas related, that was never a requirement, so today I made my daughter some Origami stars.  They are quite small (bout 3cm tall) which always seems to be more fun for little kids.  They are also quite sturdy so will likely last through playtime a bit longer than some of the other crafts.

52 Create – Craftvent Calendar, Day 6

52 Create, my weekly creative output for 2011.  Continuing along with my “Craftvent” calendar for my 2 year old daughter.  Simply put, it’s an advent calendar filled with crafts, all home made, many will be joint projects so she gets some fun of making stuff as well.

Day 6 – Today I made a Finnish Christmas Star.  I got the idea here, but used an old toy catalogue instead of fancy paper (cause that’s what I had).  While it looks complicated, it’s actually pretty simple once you get going.  I think this could be really nice made out of contrasting wood veneers (maple/walnut, ash/mahogany, etc.) and would definitely last longer.  This one is now hanging in our apartment as it’s far too fragile for a little 2 year old’s hands…
